Ingredients
  

Main Batter
  • 2 medium onions, finely chopped
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp cornmeal (optional) for extra crunch
  • vegetable oil for frying
Optional Dipping Sauce
  • 0.5 cup sour cream or mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp vinegar or lemon juice
  • 0.5 tsp paprika
  • salt and pepper to taste

Method
 

  1. Finely chop onions and sauté briefly for softer texture if desired.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, pepper, and cornmeal in a bowl.
  3. In another bowl, whisk milk and egg together.
  4. Stir wet ingredients into dry mixture to form a thick batter.
  5. Fold in chopped onions until well coated.
  6. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) and drop spoonfuls of batter into skillet.
  7. Fry 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Drain on paper towels and serve warm with dipping sauce.

Notes

These fritters are best served fresh but reheat well in the oven for crispness.
