Ingredients
  

Cake
  • 1 cup milk steeped with Earl Grey
  • 4 bags Earl Grey tea
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.75 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 0.33 cup vegetable oil
  • 0.5 cup sour cream
Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream
Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar optional
  • 3 tablespoons brewed Earl Grey tea

Equipment

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and prepare cake pans.
  2. Steep milk with Earl Grey tea and cool.
  3. Mix dry ingredients together.
  4. Add butter and blend until sandy.
  5. Whisk wet ingredients together and add to dry mixture.
  6. Add steeped milk and mix until smooth.
  7. Bake cake layers 25–30 minutes.
  8. Prepare buttercream and frost cooled layers.
  9. Add optional Earl Grey glaze drip.

Notes

For deeper Earl Grey flavor, add ground loose leaf tea to the batter.
