New York Chopped Cheese Sandwich

A classic NYC bodega-style sandwich made with chopped ground beef, melted cheese, and fresh toppings inside a toasted hoagie roll.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil or butter
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 2 hoagie rolls, split and toasted
  • 0.5 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp mustard (optional)
  • salt and black pepper to taste

  • Skillet or flat-top griddle

Method
 

  1. Toast hoagie rolls until golden brown and set aside.
  2. Cook chopped onions in oil until golden, about 3–4 minutes.
  3. Add ground beef, season, and brown on both sides before chopping.
  4. Add cheese slices over beef, let melt, then mix together.
  5. Spread mayo and ketchup on rolls, layer with lettuce and tomato.
  6. Pile on beef mixture, wrap sandwich, and serve hot.

Notes

Best enjoyed fresh off the skillet. For extra authenticity, wrap in foil before serving.
