- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place butter in a 9x13-inch baking dish and let it melt as oven preheats.
- Toss blackberries with 1/2 cup sugar and lemon zest in a bowl. Set aside.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, remaining sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Stir in milk and vanilla until smooth; batter will be thin.
- Pour batter into melted butter (do not stir). Spoon sugared blackberries over batter.
- Bake 40–45 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
- Cool 10 minutes before serving with vanilla ice cream.
